Title: “SUTRA FUSION”

Size: 30” W x 47” H
(unframed)

Story:
When I think of India, I visualize in a full spectrum of color. From the pink sands of Jaipur, to the purple haze at dawn in Sarnath, to the bright yellows, oranges and golds of the flowers at center stage in Indian festivals, to the beautiful women wrapped in yards of sequined and jeweled silk, the intensity of color must be seen to be believed. The word, “sutra” means a thread or a tale. No wonder Buddhism began in such a colorful country. Here, the threads of time and place fuse into brilliant color.

Materials:
(Center top to bottom) A panel from an early 1900’s Tibetan Silver Inlaid hat symbolizing wealth and good luck, with a late 1800’s Tibetan ornamental pouch elaborately decorated with auspicious symbols and coral, with a 1905 Chinese copper lion door knocker from the ancient capital of Xi’an, flanked with two tassels from a late 1800’s Tibetan child’s hat, with a large contemporary Chinese tassel, accented at top with a band of late 1800’s Tibetan thangka fabric, resting on mid-1800’s lavender Chinese silk embroidery, with late 1800’s embroidery from a chieftain’s sleeve from Uzbekistan, with a panel from a 1910 Tibetan hat at bottom, all resting on acrylic painted Artist-designed gold- and copper-leafed wooden panels, veiled in vintage Indian sari fabric, bordered with wood-wrapped insets in same sari fabric, adorned at top and bottom with late 1800’s Tibetan lavender sections from a Buddhist’s “lotus-shaped” lama’s hat.
